Ox Fanzine reviews Hive Mind

We were super pleased and proud to encounter this amazing review of 2024’s HIVE MIND CD in the October 2026 issue of Germany’s Ox Fanzine! The original copy is in German, but we’ve translated it in English below. Read on, friends, then revisit the CD HERE!

FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS:
“An eerie thrumming and long, lingering saxophone notes open the experimental track ‘Hive Mind.’ The eroding spoken-word delivery can initially be attributed to a woman reflecting—without any illusions—on love and sex: ‘And I believe / That love is at the bottom of a bottomless world / Baby, I’ve fucked so many men / I don’t think sex will ever mean love again / But sure, I will give it a try.’ Gradually, synthetic modulation and programmed distortion obscure the human origin of Mary Munson McGee’s deep voice. THE POPEBOY COLLECTIVE is an electro-space-industrial quintet from Houston, Texas. ‘Hive Mind’ is constructed through programmed sounds and synthesizers, yet it still incorporates traditional rock instrumentation, embellishing its colossal frequency range with occasional trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone. It is left to Mary Munson McGee to bring feminist struggles to the fore in a substantive way.”
